Regionals Info
MMWA and MYWAY Regionals are fast approaching. Our MMWA Regional will be on March 4th at either Clio or Perry. You must sign up and pay for regionals by February 16th. Also, to be eligible to wrestle in the MMWA Regionals, you must have wrestled two times in an MMWA tournament.
The MYWAY Regional will be held at Clio on March 10th. You must sign up by March 8th. Payment will be at the weigh in on March 9th. Cost is TBD at this time. You must have wrestled in two MYWAY tournament to be eligible for MYWAY Regionals.Tournament Time
Be sure to stop by practices to sign up for tournaments. As a reminder, the cut-off time for signing up for MMWA tournaments is Thursday the week prior to the tournament weekend. Wrestlers must be paid at the time of sign up or have payment arrangements made. All MMWA tournaments cost $9.
Anyone may sign up for a MYWAY tournament up to the Thursday the week of the tournament. Most MYWAY tournaments cost $12, and all are to be paid at the time of weigh-in. Parents may sign up their own wrestler online, however, if you do so, please let us know so we can prepare a tournament roster for the coaches. If you would like to sign up your wrestler yourself and don't know how, please ask. We can show you how.
Reminder!
Just a reminder. If school is closed, practice is cancelled.
The Waterford Wrestling Club has a Facebook page. All you have to do is like it. Follow this link or click on the icon to get there. Once you're there just like it.
How Pairing Works
For those of you who have been to the tournaments. You may have noticed that MMWA tournaments are run differently from MYWAY tournaments. The most noticable difference is how the matches are determined. MYWAY uses typical double elimination bracket. The size and type of bracket is determined by the number of wrestlers in the bracket. All MYWAY tournaments are typically run out to fourth place until the state championships.
MMWA, however, uses a freestyle pairing method. How this is done is very difficult to do. The Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Association has a very nice tutorial on how freestyle pairing is done. Click here to see the tutorial. It should provide you with enough of an idea how the MMWA tournaments work.
Equipment Information
Wrestling is not a sport that requires a lot of equipment. However, street shoes are not allowed on the mats. This requires that wrestlers have wrestling shoes for practice and tournaments. Shoes can be purchased locally at Dunham's, Sports Authority, or David's Gold Medal in Warren. If you know the size you need and are savvy enough, there are a number of places online to purchase shoes, also. All-American Wrestling Supply is a sponsor of USA Wrestling, our sports national governing body. Wrestling Gear.com (WGC) is another site filled with plenty of equipment. Blue Chip Wrestling was a supplier for Michigan's USA Wrestling's national teams. Wrestling Addix is a site with local ties to Michigan and is also the supplier of our singlets. Their shoe selection seems to be limited to Adidas shoes only.
Headgear is sometimes optional and sometimes not. It is suggested to have headgear on hand in case the tournament or league requires its use. Knee pads, elbow pads, or sleeves are optional. They are subject to the preference of the wrestler. Any wrestler with hair over the ears or below the collar will be required to wear a hair net. Please make sure you have one at the ready for your wrestler.
Lastly, any wrestler with braces will be required to wear a mouth guard. If there are braces on the upper and/or lower teeth, they must be covered by a guard.
We're On Twitter!
In an effort to provide better means of communication to our parents, we have signed up for Twitter. It is our hope that this is a useful tool to
provide feedback to AND from parents to the club and each other. Feel free to follow us on Twitter as you can never have enough communication.
Email List Information
We have had an email list since last season. Not many people have subscribed. I would like to see more of our parents on the list. It is a good
way for everyone to keep in touch with the other club parents. In case you are sure how it works, let me explain.
The email list's address is waterfordwc@yahoogroups.com. When a member sends an email to the address, it gets sent to all of the subscribers on
the list. Since it is a private list, no spam gets through, since only subscribers are allowed to send and receive emails from the list. All
members of the list have to be approved, therefore no one that isn't affiliated with the club may subscribe. If you would like to join the list,
simply click here or on the image to the left
to join.
